What is a humanist funeral?
A humanist funeral is a non-religious funeral service and it can be as individual as the life you are remembering. The service is led by a non-religious celebrant and they will work with you to craft a unique and personal service.
What is a celebrant?
A celebrant is a non-religious professional who performs ceremonies such as weddings, baby namings and funerals. Our specialist funeral celebrants are experts at sympathetically supporting families throughout the process and working with them to write the service and select music, poetry and/or readings, as well as delivering the service at the funeral.
Do I have to be a humanist to have a humanist funeral?
No, humanist funerals are suitable for anyone who would prefer a non-religious funeral service. Our celebrants will always also ensure that guests with religious beliefs attending the funeral are made to feel welcome and included.
What happens at a humanist funeral?
That’s entirely up to you. Your celebrant will follow your wishes. Often people prefer to focus on an uplifting service that celebrates the life of the person. You can include stories, music, poetry, or anecdotes. Friends and family are also welcome to speak – to share memories, or to do a reading.
When you arrive; your celebrant will greet you and your guests and welcome you into the hall. The coffin will be at the front of the hall. Your celebrant will then conduct the service. At the end of the service, your chosen music will be played as you and your guests leave.
The cremation takes place after the funeral and the ashes can be collected the following week.
Where are humanist funerals in Kingston held?
We host our services in a beautiful chapel within the grounds of Kingston cemetery, just a short drive from the centre of Kingston Upon Thames. The chapel can accommodate up to 40 guests. It has a modern sound system and ample free parking.
I want a humanist funeral but I don’t really know what to include. Can you help?
Our celebrants have many years of experience and are there to offer help and advice. They can explain all the options and make recommendations that help you to choose a service that feels just right.
As there is no set script it is really important for our celebrants to speak with you and/or your family, so they can create a truly unique service.
